Precipitated silica is an amorphous form of silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2); it is a white, powdery material. Precipitated silica is produced by precipitation from a solution containing silicate salts.
Precipitated silica and colloidal silica are produced in the process shown in Figure 4.37. Since the original raw material is silicic acid sodium, relatively inexpensive SiO2 particles are obtained.
